You may wonder what it means to be “Psychotherapist in training under supervision”. Well, this simply means that I am in my final stages of my training to become a licensed therapist. And this journey started after I completed my bachelor’s degree in theology in Durban, South Africa in 2008. During a Christian counselling course, we had a very brief overview of the main personality theories such as psychodynamic, humanistic, and behaviouristic theories. This got me curious. I not only wanted to know more about these theories, but I also felt that this path would afford me tools that would be of help to me and to the people I was going to talk to. This led me to the Austrian capital, Vienna, where I have been studying Psychotherapy Science at Sigmund Freud Private University. I got my bachelor’s degree in Psychotherapy Science in 2018 and currently working to finalise my master’s degree in Psychotherapy Science. Although it has been a longer learning process than I had planned for it to be, Psychotherapy Science and Practice has indeed given me the tools that I felt I would be afforded when I first embarked on this journey.
As a psychotherapist in training under supervision, I am allowed by law to conduct therapy with clients. My method specific training is in Systemic Therapy. This approach has shaped me to see the different aspects of the client who must deal with different aspects of the family and society they are in. These different aspects may include friendships, relationships, politics, work, and pleasure. And in seeing those different aspects, Systemic therapy for me has been about making small steps that reveal the bigger picture. Said differently, it brings one to a place where they can see that there are other possibilities. In my systemic approach, I will be giving you space to talk for you to make small steps into other possibilities. Looking forward to seeing you in my praxis.
